Sometimes the most ordinary moments spark surprisingly insightful conversations — like today’s lunch in the office, which turned into a brown sauce brand analysis.
Someone reached for HP, someone else mentioned YR, and suddenly we were examining sauce branding like it was case law 📚.
HP leans on its Houses of Parliament heritage 🏛️ — the building, the initials, the whole visual identity working together as a classic, trust-driven brand. YR, from Yorkshire Relish, shows how simple initials can evolve into a strong, recognisable brand identity.
Then came the taste debate 🤔: HP tradition vs. YR flavour. And the stories? One theory says they were originally made in the same factory, with HP supposedly coming about because “Yorkshire Relish” didn’t sound appealing enough to southern consumers 😲. Another claims HP gained traction because it was served in the Houses of Parliament — adding a dash of prestige 👑.
No winner was declared, but it’s a tasty reminder: behind every brand, even a sauce bottle, there’s history, storytelling, and office controversy 😎.
