Michael O’Connor - Patent Attorney

Donal Michael graduated from Dublin City University with a degree in Electronic Engineering and joined Cruickshank Intellectual Property Attorneys in 1999. As a qualified European and Irish Patent Attorney, Michael has filed and successfully prosecuted many patents, at both the European and Irish Patent Offices, and has prepared and prosecuted patent applications for many other jurisdictions, including the USA and countries in Asia and Australasia. In his eight years with the company, he has already built up an impressive client base, ranging in size from SMEs to multinational corporations.

Cruickshank’s is delighted to have Michael on board because he is in fact one of the very few qualified European Patent Attorneys in Ireland specialising in electronics and holding a degree in Electronic Engineering. He has gained extensive experience in the filing and prosecuting of electronic-related inventions: his work to date has encompassed patents related to transformer design and construction, micro-processors, semi-conductors, controllers and sensors, to name but a few. In addition to his work in the electronics field, Michael also has experience in a wide range of other disparate fields, including mechanical engineering, software engineering, data encryption, broadcasting and telecommunications. He has a particular interest in the prosecution of patents in the electronic, telecommunications and software fields.

Michael is currently a member of the Patent Law Committee of the Association of Patent and Trademark Attorneys. He has lectured on IP matters in University College Dublin, Waterford Institute of Technology and at the Institute of Technology in Tallaght, and is currently in his third year as a Ceipi tutor. Beyond the professional arena he has a keen interest in many sports, particularly golf and sailing.

Sarah McCrann - Patent Attorney

Donal Sarah joined the Cruickshank team in 2003, coming from a background as a hardware design engineer. She holds a BE (Hons) in Electronic Engineering from University College Dublin and a Masters in Telecommunications Engineering from Dublin City University. In her time with the company she has assisted in the preparation and prosecution of many patent applications in different fields, including mechanical engineering, telecommunications and electronic and software engineering and encompassing technologies such as hydraulic systems, forklift trucks, power systems, monitoring and control systems, encryption, network management along with a wide variety of distributed computer systems.  

Sarah is a qualified Irish and Community Trademark Attorney and Community Design Attorney. She advises many of Cruickshank’s new clients on their IP options and also has experience of infringement matters and opposition at the European Patent Office. At present Sarah is preparing to sit the qualifying exams to become a European Patent Attorney; she has already passed the first of the exams necessary to become an Irish Patent Attorney.  

When she is not at her desk, Sarah is a keen sailor who enjoys racing every week in Dublin Bay. She is also a supporter of Munster and Irish rugby.
